UFC London: Werdum vs Volkov is scheduled for 17 March (from The O2 Arena in London, England), it’s been a year since the UFC last touched down in London, and I’m sure the fans in London have eagerly been waiting for the UFC to return. The fight card is filled with some compelling fights, including Alexander Volkov versus Fabricio Werdum in the main event, Jimi Manuwa versus Jan Błachowicz in the co-main event slot, Tom Duquesnoy versus Terrion Ware as the featured fight of the evening, and much more.
Let’s take a look at the Main Event,
The headline event in UFC London will feature submission specialist Fabricio Werdum who takes on knockout artist Alexander Volkov. Werdum (23-7-1, MMA, 11-4 UFC) takes on Volkov (29-6 MMA, 3-0 UFC). Fabricio Werdum is No. 3 in the Official UFC Heavyweight rankings, Werdum hopes to build his case for another heavyweight title shot after back-to-back wins while he takes on former Bellator champion Alexander Volkov who’s won three straight bouts since signing with the UFC and now occupies the No. 8 spot in the UFC rankings.
Fabricio Werdum can blend his striking, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques well and is always able to fire powerful kicks with little fear of repercussion. Werdum commonly mixes a stepping knee into his attack and continues to hold onto the double collar tie. Sometimes Werdum would rely on his Judo ability by pushing his opponents against the cage only to suddenly turn it into a takedown. Although lately, Werdum has been relying more on the Muay Thai clinch when in close quarters.
Alexander Volkov usually creates sudden, unexpected knockouts with his strikes. Volkov has a dominant kickboxing game with sound technique and has excellent takedown defense. Werdum has the advantage on the ground and is usually expected to put down pressure on his opponent’s neck and break their posture. Therefore Volkov cannot win this fight so easily. If Volkov needs to give himself the best chances of success, he would need to pay attention to Werdum’s several guards especially the butterfly guard. Furthermore, Volkov would need to attack with jabs and body shots and do not forget to use his massive power in tight ranges to try and knock out Werdum.
It would be an excellent match to watch out for because the stakes are high and fans would be excited to see Werdum who has not fought in Europe since 2008. Werdum who last fought in Europe since his UFC 85 win over Brandon Vera would need a win to act as a star attraction for his fight fans. Meanwhile, Volkov would love to stop Werdum in his tracks as he climbs the leaderboard and be ranked as a top-five light heavyweight in the UFC, inching closer to title contention.
Official Prediction: Alexander Volkov def. Fabricio Werdum via KO 2nd round.
